Heathrow to central London: choosing your journey

The right way into London depends on where you are staying. Paddington, a West End hotel and an office near Liverpool Street are different destinations, even though all might appear on an itinerary as “central London”. Start with the full address, then compare the entire journey from the terminal to the door.

Check your London transfer

For a Heathrow arrival, have the terminal, flight number and the full London address ready. Choose an entrance the travelling passenger can identify: a hotel reception, apartment entrance or office reception may be on a different street from the postcode’s map pin.

If you are booking for someone else, agree a lead passenger and use contact details they can access after landing. Share the booking reference and collection instructions with them. If the hotel or appointment has changed, update the destination before comparing vehicles.

The main transport choices

Heathrow Express runs to Paddington. Heathrow publishes a 15-minute train journey from Terminals 2 & 3, with additional travel from Terminal 5 and a connection needed for Terminal 4. Those figures describe the train journey, not the time from leaving the aircraft to reaching a hotel. Check the current Heathrow Express information for your date.

The Elizabeth line serves several stations across central London, while the Piccadilly line provides Underground connections. The useful option depends on your final address and any changes needed. Heathrow’s rail and Underground guide shows the main choices.

A pre-arranged road transfer lets you specify an address for the journey. Compare its route and vehicle capacity with the walking, changes and luggage handling involved in public transport. Traffic means a car journey should not be planned around one fixed “Heathrow to London” time.

The main transport choices
Your situation What to compare
Staying near Paddington The station-to-hotel walk, your Heathrow terminal and current train service
Staying elsewhere in central London The nearest useful station, any interchange and the final walk
Travelling with children or several cases Space for the whole party, changes, lifts and luggage handling
Arriving late or departing early Services actually running at the time and the agreed road pickup
Attending a timed appointment Time to reach the entrance, clear reception and allow for disruption

Give the address you need to reach

Copy the address from your accommodation or appointment confirmation and check the postcode. For a hotel chain, add the exact property name. For a serviced apartment, find out whether key collection happens at the apartment or at another office.

If your building faces more than one street, agree which entrance you will use. Mention any separate stop before confirming a booking, including collecting keys or dropping a member of the group at another address. A route with an extra stop needs to be planned as such.

Allow for the arrival process

Your flight’s landing time does not tell you when you will leave Heathrow. You may have a walk from the gate, passport checks, baggage reclaim and the route to the meeting point ahead of you. Keep your collection instructions to hand and send an update if you are delayed.

If a train or coach option has a fixed departure, check the ticket conditions and leave enough time for the arrival process. If you are arranging a car, ask how pickup timing and waiting work for your booking. Do not assume the rules are the same across different transport providers.

Travelling back to Heathrow

Use your airline’s check-in and bag-drop requirements to set an airport arrival target. Build the road or public transport journey around that target, with time for loading, changes where relevant and reaching check-in.

Check the departure terminal even if you arrived at Heathrow a few days earlier. For a hotel collection, tell us the entrance and have everyone ready with their luggage. If you have bought extra bags or are travelling with more people on the return, review the vehicle choice.

What goes into your quote

A quote needs the actual pickup and destination, travel date and time, passenger count and suitcase count. Choose the vehicle using the full luggage load, including cabin bags and bulky items. The fleet guide explains the published allowances.

Check the journey price, VAT and total in the booking system, together with the booking terms. This page does not set a fixed Heathrow–London fare. A stop at a second hotel or key-collection office should be included in the itinerary before you confirm.

For London to Heathrow, use your collection address and departure terminal. The requested pickup time is when the car is needed at that address. Work back from your airline’s check-in and bag-drop requirements; a quoted road journey is not a guarantee of arrival by a flight deadline.

If you need both directions, check each leg separately. Use existing-booking support for an agreed journey and read the change and cancellation guidance before making a replacement booking.

Choosing space for the journey

Count people and luggage separately. A party of three with three large cases may need a different category from three people with two. Include pushchairs, mobility aids and equipment when describing the load. The fleet guide lists the published capacities and explains what to check for unusually shaped items.
